Name: The Girl of Ink and Stars
Author: Kiran Millwood Hargrave
More about this book: The reason I like this book so much is because it is so descriptive, the story really comes to life. This book is full of mystery, magic and sacrifice. It is set in olden times and leaves you wanting more. After I read it, I really wanted to read the other books by Kiran.
It is set on a island called Joya, led by a greedy man. The hero is a young girl called Isabella who’s father (Da) is a cartographer. When children disappear, Isabella is desperate to help. This book left me feeling inspired and encouraged to do good and it really hooked me with its first few sentences.
They say the day the Governor arrived, all the ravens did to. All the smaller birds flew backwards into the sea, and that is why there are no songbirds on Joya. Only huge, ragged ravens. I’d watch them perch on the rooftops like bad omens, and I’d try and squint them into chaffinches and goldcrests like the ones Da drew from memory. If I imagined hard enough, I could almost hear them singing.
